It's very much exactly like the difference between a scripted single-player RPG like Neverwinter Nights and an MMORPG like World of Warcraft.but both run entirely offline on your computer (with all the other 'players' in the MMORPG like WoW handled by AI subroutines). You join, and pick up a flight, and run a mission. Without you flying a single thing, a war is running. With Falcon 4.0 - there is an entire war going on. Frequently, if you fly too far out of the area your mission should cover, you'll even stop encountering enemy units or buildings. The entire game world exists for your flight alone. Then, another 'mission' is drawn from the program for you. You get a 'mission', and the game starts when you enter the 'mission' and the game ends when you complete it (or are destroyed).

That's really how most flight sims have been - the entire Jane's combat sim series, Flanker, LOMAC, etc. You could fly the same mission over and over and over and the same units will be present reacting to the same actions you take the same way. Like in the X-Wing games, you had a mission with specific objectives, specific enemies would spawn at specific points on the map at a certain time (or due to a certain event), and it was all fixed. You aren't just flying missions like in other games, basically. And the 'flight simulation' aspect of this is just as hardcore as LOMAC - all the exotic weapons deployment, guidance systems, launch methods - all the aircraft flight envelope performance, etc.Д®ven back in the day, Falcon 4.0 - at launch - benefitted SUBSTANTIALLY from a multi-CPU environment. Much more complicated than any RTS game out to date, to boot, as it is attempting to accurately simulate this war fought by thousands of AI units to reality.ДЄnd, at the same time as all that's going on, you can hop in several of the different aircraft taking off from a base and fly the mission it was assigned (and if you don't.well, the AI will do that same mission without you just fine). Management of resources, too - if a nuke plant is destroyed, power drops are experienced which may effect the sortie rate of nearby airbases and resupply speed of units.ДЇalcon 4.0 has - literally - an ENTIRE WAR going on in the background. Which weapons and mission are assigned to each of the dozen flights launching from each of the hundred airbases. Troop movements, tank platoons engaging in combat with each other, supply units trying to make it to the infantry holding a vital bridge.Д®ven supply - what weapons are stored at each of the hundred airbases in the theater. The next Korean War, the next Balkans War - they are being fought out in EVERY DETAIL at the same time as the flight sim is playing. There is a full-scare war going on in the background. It's not just a flight sim - like every other flight sim on the market.
